I found the socratic method both frustrating and enlightening. It was really hard to get started coming up with the rhetorical questions that would draw out information through the responses. However, once I got going it started to flow much more easily and opened up more ideas and questions. It was a really difficult process and very tiring on my brain, this week's assignment had me mentally exhausted.

I feel that the information I used for this assignment is relevant. It covers a wide range of sources from looking at authors, bloggers, researchers and statistical data. I also looked at others who have created content or lessons for the high school curriculum, but everything is all over the place. There needs to be cohesion. I looked at things to see if they were connecting and creating insights into what exactly needs to be improved and/or changed trying to figure out where I could go in regards to deliverables. Which would be best and be the most effective for the audience that I had in mind.
Motivate creative thinking skills within the classroom FACT: Currently there is no emphasis on the importance of teaching graphic design in high schools in America. PROBLEM: Most students/people don’t understand the design process and how valuable a tool and skillset these skills are for anyone on a professional/personal level. OUTCOME: I will create a graphic design curriculum and teaching tools for high school students.
Graphic Design for high school students and the design process statement: Currently there is no emphasis on the importance of teaching graphic design or the design process in high schools in America. One might come in contact with these skills in an art class but it really depends on the teacher. Teaching the design process and incorporating it into multiple subject areas by strengthening their problem solving skills and helping them understand how to create content and communicate effectively. The information that I read and watched may be a bit biased because they were all looking at improving education with different ways of thinking via the design process or showing that the design process is important in all subject matter. Some showed studies showing improvement of problem solving skills and better design ideas when the design process is learned and utilized. Some of my sources were based on empirical research like the video/ted talk on “If you Build it”. Where they actually created a school that taught all the subjects in one giant hands on project, using the design process to create. Other sources were secondary research based and were based on others research. Only a couple of them were tertiary, coming from educational textbooks. But all were viable to see the topic from different sides of the spectrum.
Describe what you did:
What I did was I looked deep into my interests and thought about what would be the most interesting idea/topic for me personally. One that I wouldn’t get tired of working on, and talking about. Something that I was super passionate about. After writing and writing until my hand hurt I was better able to determine the things that I could weed out and the things that should be considered for topics. Describe what was successful: I think that what was successful was coming up with a lot of really different ideas. Not all of them might have been good. But it helped going through the stages to just keep writing and thinking and delving deeper into everything. Describe what was unsuccessful and could be improved: I feel like by the end of the week I was mentally exhausted and was having a hard time coming up with things. I could only do so much each day before I mentally shut down. This is definitely one of the hardest things I’ve had to do. I just kept thinking the entire time, what if I pick a topic and start working on it and decide I hate it. Then what? It’s really quite scary. I think these thoughts may have also been holding back my progress a bit. Describe anything new or interesting you learned: I’ve never been much for writing down day to day things that have happened or are happening. When we had to write each day at least a page, it was really helpful to get some of the things off my chest. I wish I had more time to make that a staple in my routine. It may also help alleviate some of the stress and anxiety I’m feeling about this whole process. |
